Matt Lauer on Obama releasing ‘skeet shooting’ photo: Now the president has to back up his words with proof?

State of the State of the Mainstream Media: Asking select politicians to prove their claims now constitutes setting an unfortunate precedent:

During a panel discussion on Tuesday’s NBC Today about the White House releasing a photo of President Obama skeet shooting to dispel doubt about his claim of doing it “all the time,” co-host Matt Lauer worried about the precedent that had been set: “So like releasing the birth certificate a year or so ago, this is the next step, that now the President always has to back up his words with proof?

I believe it was Edward R. Murrow’s lesser known journalist brother Chip Murrow who said “a good reporter automatically believes everything a politician says.”

The claim of shooting skeet “all the time” came from the same person who told us he’d cut the deficit in half in his first term, close Gitmo and that if we all liked our current health plans we could keep them. Too bad Lauer will probably never be able to bring himself to admit that Obama has earned at least some of the skepticism.

During the presidential campaign, for some reason Lauer didn’t seem as willing to take Mitt Romney at his word when it came to his tax returns. Lauer asked Romney why he was taking so long to back up his words with — you guessed it — proof:

LAUER: Let’s – you’ve mentioned the economy. Let’s talk, for a second, about your own personal economy. I don’t have to tell you how much air time and ink has been dedicated to your taxes, your investments, and things like that over the last couple of months. I’m not going to go through the minutiae of what tax information you’ve released. But here is my question, knowing that you’re running for president, and have been for six years, why not call an accountant and say, “Look, let’s make this simple, let’s take away any of the drama, let’s make it incredibly transparent so as not give my opponents any ammunition.” Why didn’t you do that?

ROMNEY: Well, we just laid out exactly what is required by law, which is all of our financial statements, and then, in addition, two years of tax reports, just like John McCain put out. So we looked at what he did, we’ve done the same thing. It’s hundreds of pages of documents. And my guess is if you decide to do more and more and more, you just give, if you will, the opposition a chance to distort and twist and be dishonest about more material.

LAUER: So you don’t think you’ve raised more questions than you’ve answered in releasing the amount of information you have to date?

ROMNEY: We’ve laid out all that’s required by law and then some, the same as John McCain. And we just don’t want to give the DNC more things for them to pick at, distort in the way they have already.

Back to the Lauer comment, Curt over at Flopping Aces observes:

…we have strayed into dangerous territory when a member of our media is aghast that our President needs to back up what he says with proof. Are you freaking kidding me?

Sadly, no.
